MJ Dowling
MJ Dowling is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is shaped by a foundation in both art and architecture. Raised in the Adirondacks, she was influenced by her mother’s love of painting and her father’s passion for construction, leading her to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, with a minor in art. After graduating, Dowling served over twenty years as a commissioned officer and registered architect in the U.S. Air Force, later working in private architectural practice in New York before relocating to Florida.
Dowling’s art explores innovation through motion, participation, and the breaking of traditional boundaries. As a 3D interactive artist, she creates installations composed of independently mounted, freely rotating canvases that respond to touch and movement. Each interaction reshapes the composition, producing shifting alignments of color and form. Emphasizing collaboration, chance, and impermanence, her work dissolves the line between artist and viewer, inviting playful discovery and personal engagement within a constantly evolving visual experience.
