Ray Gross

Ray Gross is an American ceramic artist known for his hand-built, hand-painted hyperrealistic porcelain sculptures. Working primarily with imagery drawn from artists’ tools and familiar everyday objects, he transforms paint tubes, brushes, pencils, culinary items, and other recognizable forms into striking sculptural works. By dramatically shifting their scale, Gross invites viewers to reconsider objects that are often overlooked, creating pieces that balance technical precision with humor, imagination, and a sense of wonder.

Using intricate fabrication, multiple firings, painting, decals, and glazing, Gross creates each sculpture as a unique, one-of-a-kind work. His practice spans decades and includes his celebrated monumental Orange Harley-Davidson sculpture and his signature “art supplies as art” series. His work has been presented at venues including the American Craft Museum in New York and SCOPE Art Basel, reflecting a career defined by craftsmanship, authenticity, and an unwavering commitment to bringing his creative vision into physical form.
