About the Artist
Itzchak Tarkay (1935–2012) was an internationally acclaimed Israeli artist celebrated for his elegant figurative paintings that captured moments of quiet beauty and timeless sophistication. Born in Subotica on the former Yugoslav-Hungarian border, Tarkay survived the horrors of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp during World War II before emigrating with his family to Israel in 1949. After studying at both the Bezalel Academy of Art and the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, he developed a distinctive artistic style influenced by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, while drawing inspiration from masters such as Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Renowned for his graceful portrayals of women in refined interiors and sunlit settings, Tarkay created works that celebrate elegance, contemplation, and the quiet pleasures of everyday life.
