About the Artist
Joel Shapses is an accomplished sculptor whose work explores movement, balance, and the expressive potential of stone, metal, glass, and light. Born in New Jersey, he demonstrated an exceptional artistic talent from childhood while also pursuing a distinguished academic career, earning degrees in Biology and Dentistry. Throughout his education, renowned sculptors and anatomy professors recognized his extraordinary sculpting ability, encouraging him to develop the artistic path that would become his lifelong passion. Since relocating to South Florida in 1972, Shapses has created an extensive body of work exhibited throughout North and South America.
Working across marble, limestone, alabaster, bronze, fused glass, aluminum, and illuminated media, Shapses creates sculptures that range from elegant figurative forms to bold abstract compositions. His work is distinguished by its remarkable sense of movement and tactile presence, inviting viewers to engage both visually and physically. A former president of the Broward Art Guild, he continues to work from his Naples studio, where he creates monumental sculptures and custom commissions. Through every piece, Shapses transforms raw materials into enduring expressions of energy, precision, and emotion.
